Eagle is not an HMO. As an independent business, Eagle Physicians has chosen to contract as a participating provider in a selected number of so-called "managed care plans". HMOs and PPOs (Preferred Provider Organizations) are created by insurance companies to finance health care services. However, it is medical groups like Eagle and hospitals like Moses Cone Health System that actually "deliver" the health services that insurance plans and patients pay for. Each insurance company, not Eagle, establishes its own coverage, benefit structure, eligibility requirements and other "rules" with which its subscribers (members) and Eagle must comply. Eagle refuses to contract with any insurance company that imposes rules onto physicians or patients that we think may be contrary to the best medical interests of patients, or from whom adequate financial resources are not provided for patient services that are medically necessary.
